Join Village Books and the North Cascades Institute as we host Langdon Cook for a talk about his latest book, The Mushroom Hunters. Wild mushrooms–porcini, morels, truffles–are among the most expensive and coveted ingredients in a four-star chef’s kitchen. By contrast, the mushroom hunters are grubby yet woods-savvy treasure seekers, iconoclasts, and loners. And Langdon Cook is an experienced outdoorsman with a nose for a good story. These are the ingredients of The Mushroom Hunters. Despite warnings of booby-trapped patches, gun-toting pickers, and wilderness pitfalls, the author sets out to uncover the shadowy subculture of foragers who bring these gourmet edibles to market from the far reaches of the woods. Traveling from New York to the Yukon, he meets the pickers, buyers, and chefs engaged in a rough-hewn, frontier-style capitalism that echoes Gold Rush days gone by. Finally, strapping on his heavy boots and leaving his family behi nd, he ventures into the bush to live and compete with the pros on their turf.

Langdon Cook is the author of Fat of the Land: Adventures of a 21st Century Forager, which The Seattle Times called “lyrical, practical and quixotic.” Cook has been profiled on the Travel Channel, in Bon Appetit, WSJ magazine, Whole Living, and Salon.com, and his writing has appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers, including Sunset, Gray’s Sporting Journal, and Outside. He is also a columnist for Seattle magazine and has been the recipient of many grants and awards. He lives in Seattle with his wife and two children.
