An Amazing Layering Piece: The Rab Evolute Hoody

I’ve always been impressed with any technical garment from Rab and the Evolute Hoody is no exception; it’s an amazing layering piece. Under my ski shell, it manages a comfortable microclimate as few other pieces can. In many ways, this mid-layer reminds me of the Patagonia Nano Air and others of that ilk, but without a wind-resistant shell or an inner liner, so the insulation is lighter, exposed, breathes better—and is $65 less expensive.

This hoody is made for high aerobic activities in changing temperatures throughout the day. Specifically made to work under a shell, the Evolute Hoody retains warmth in the long-haired fleece and disperses moisture to the stretchy shell as your activity starts and stops. The hood fits perfectly under a helmet and the elasticized fringe keeps it out of your face. This active insulation allows you to dump extra heat when needed, yet also keeps you warm.

Although the Evolute Hoody is less able to shed a biting wind, it’s the perfect choice if you are overheating in other mid-layers.
