Geology of the North Cascades: A Mountain Mosaic
by Rowland Tabor and Ralph Haugerud, drawings by Anne Crowder, Mountaineers Books
When hiking through the North Cascades, have you ever wondered about the rocks underfoot and the peaks you’re climbing? Hikers curious about the geology of our region but new to the subject, as well as geologists who want to learn the specifics of our area, will benefit from reading this book.
The guide starts with a review of North Cascades geology, which is much needed since this area’s geology is unique and hugely varied. However, the bulk of the book consists of detailed descriptions of the geologic features of the individual trails, making this particular guide unique. It describes 154 trails organized around the west, north, south, and east sides of the various river drainages of the North Cascades. The pen and ink drawings are easy to compare to what we’re viewing on the trail: outlining faults, terranes, changes in rock types, plus the origins of the features. The guide also includes select color photographs and detailed maps.
