Reflections on Desolation Sound

The off-season in Desolation Sound, on the British Columbia Coast, has a mysterious feel. I haven’t seen another boat for hours, and nothing interrupts my boat’s wake trailing dutifully behind Elenoa for miles on the otherwise still water. Have I been transported back to prehistoric times, and am I the first to witness this astounding beauty?

In my dinghy, lost in the maze of islets near Prideaux Haven, there is not a breath of wind. Each scene converges seamlessly with its reflection, and my sense of reality merges with the wondrous synergy of form, pattern, texture, and color. Simple things become enchanting, and the world makes sense again. I am captivated-and renewed––by this “desolation.”

Lance Ekhart philosophizes aboard his sailboat Elenoa, surrounded by the fluttering birds of Flounder Bay. He searches for the meaning of life through his passionate nature photography and building boat things in his shop.
